I thought I would make a post where we can put videos of other SHMUP's and remakes of SHMUP's

EDIT by FLASH: Feel free to show us ANY SHMUP's that you regard as a classic!

Uridium (gotta love that main ship sprite)

One of my old favorites is Parallax (I loved it how you could get out of the ship)

A Gameboy Advanced remake of Sanxion (development halted by Thalamus Interactive :()

I remember Sanxion when it was called "Rainbow Warrior", We met Stavros at a show in Hammersmith Novotel. He was so so shy in 1985. We peddled his wares (me and BaDToad) and got it shown. This was when we were also showing of "Warhawk".
We got Jeff Minter to put it on the C64 on his stand where he was showing an early version of "iridis alpha" (I believe). A crowd gathered to play it and Jeff turned it off HA HA

Great days!

Many great C64 shooters, I especially loved the Defender clone where the enemy spaceships were replaced by bees and fairies, can't remember the title, think it was a Hewson publication.
This game, though, is an arcade immortal with a brilliantly simple soundtrack.

Haven't tracked down the defender-with-bees game yet (perhaps I'm the only one with fond memories of it).
Started looking for a crap or good SEUCK game (well a few on the Zzap! cover tapes had nice graphics).
Ran across this Amiga one, watch and weep :'(.

Nothing to do with your Horace, I suppose,  :) Flash?

To make up for that, Poppin' Twinbee is cutsie but still a classic.

Poor Horace, what did they do?  :'(

Twinbee games were ok, I did love the graphic style a lot more than the gameplay.

Yes, poor Horace, but thought the video was a pretty funny disaster.

Twinbee has its moments, like the bells and clouds and all, nice sounds, and it is not easy to finish. Now some videos of good Amiga shooters to show that the level of graphics years earlier on the Amiga was as good as those on the Super Nintendo (and sounds were also much better on the best examples) might be nice ... but right now, here is Zaxxon on the C64 and then the arcade version. Second is video of the tabletop, best I could find, the bloke doesn't fill it up with ego-projecting chatter. This is older than any of the others so far, revolutionary at the time (64 version especially).

C-64 version

I did enjoy Zaxxon, though I find the cabinet upgrade 'Super Spy' (I think) a better game (though not as influential). I am perhaps one of the few to think so.

I've clocked it too, but R-type was a seriously good shooter.

The earlier videos were taken down, this seems to be from a MAME emu,
the sound is not good (but interesting how part of the sound in stage 2
here is clearly a take on Suicide Express, never noticed that before).
Will try to find a better replacement.

Inspiration for Doom? Special cabinet for this was grand (as was clocking it)!

Spare Harrier have been converted great for home versions as well.... I even liked the C64 version of it (even floor is missing, but its was in US version). One of the tune from C64 version of that game us even used for Hiscore on Manic Miner DS.

Also I really liked this serie for C64, Amiga, Mega Drive as well SNes versions (all great). I did have originals of Turrican II for both C64 and Amiga and completed them both:

(moved r-type post here to avoid cross posting from other DS remakes topic, due I diddent realize its was a another topic).

I just wich the first version of R-Type got finished for C64, which seen could been more polished game for R-Type:

Its great game anyway, regardsless of format.

Space Harrier, Outrun and a couple of other Sega classics are in the arcades on Shenmue, but nothing beats the cabinet versions of either one (there was also a book with attached GD where you could play both and a few others on the DC without driving forklifts etc. on Shenmue). Sadly haven't seen a Space Harrier cabinet for a long time. Place nearby has an old Darius with mirrors and 3 CRTs to make it panoramic (colour balance is well off but it is great), also original Outrun and a real trackball Atari Marble Madness stand, among others.

The Gameboy Colour R-Type is surprisingly good BTW.

Never saw the Commodore version of Harrier. Turrican was a classic, but always thought of it as a C-64 game.

Border Down came out after Sega ran out on the Dreamcast so was only released in Japan. Arcade port, but the DC version has a lot of good extras.
