I like SimplePortal so much that I've made a post on BYOAC recommending they install the mod over there. I even offered to help out! (???)

I've always liked portal systems for community based websites. And I think it's made RetroBytes a much more attractive website. My philosophy is design community based websites around the community by having the forum software the central core and starting point. It's the people who make a website a success.

Now if only I could convince Tom to do the same thing over on GameEx!  :P (unfortunately Tom's forums are hosted by a 3rd party)

I totally agree with you about the portal system. I really does make the forum a hud of user based content.

They really could do with following your example :)

Nice job guys. This is much better.

I wish it was simpler to do in my case. The only thing is it makes managment a lot easier having a third party host it. Although its about $300 a year. Maybe I can code up some integration at some case, or god forbid move the whole thing. However Im quite happy with the forum and portal, apart from the lack of integration.

Hey Tom glad to have you onboard mate :)

The GameEx website is great with DotNetNuke but lets face it the integrated forum software was pretty hedious. You know I'm a .NET guy in most cases, but I still think php forums are the way to go.

Your probably better off having a 3rd party host your forum anyway, I was reading on BYOAC the other day that Saint's site has been inundated with bogus account signups from spammers. Seems SMF forum software has been targeted alot lately as well. We might have to increase the security signup check here too Flash.

TOM

I love the GameEx forum. It is somewhere I have spent many hours and feels like a favourite comfy sofa (in a nice way)

I am not sure I could handle CHANGE... not at my age :(

Luckily the signup security is quite easy to do, even for an old fool like me!

The only downside to too much security at the signup stage is that it does tend to put people off somewhat.
