Some info about the Atari 2600 Jr. ...

Back in 1990 or 1991, my wife and her older brother received a present from their father who was going back home from Spain. It was probably an Atari 2600 Jr. ... or at least they both recognize their console was the one in this picture:

(BTW, it came with different joysticks, they remember they were similar to this one):


What was (and IS, actually) interesting, is that they never had any cartridge to insert into the slot on top of the console... 99 (or 100) or so games where already IN the console and they were using one of the key on top of it (<SELECT> probably) to cycle among the games.

Does that sound familiar to somebody here? How was that possible?
Before you ask: they no longer have that console, but we decided to see if there's a chance to get it back somehow. We'll see...

There were several Japan/Korean consoles based on the Atari that contained a vast inbuilt library.

I have one somewhere that has about 75 games in it,  similar design to the atari 5200. There was no menu to select the games and you just had to cycle through them to find the one you wanted.

Cannot for the life of me remember what it was called though.

I'm pretty sure this is the boxed version of a 2600 I bought off eBay. I've never hooked it up though and I have no idea what the history is behind it.

The updated 2600 (jr) did not have any built in games (the 7800 had asteroids i believe).

My wife and her brother are both quite sure there was written 'Atari' on it... do you think it might have been the 'real' thing, even if it already had games inside? A modified 2600 Jr. perhaps?

I had that console too in that form. Its a cheap version of Wood original, atari released later...

I mind also seen that joystick too.

The 2600 never had pack in games. Though, there was a more recent release that did.
