Jungool: iPhone App Written Review

Reviewed by Luke Patrick
You know what genre we’d love to see more of on the iPhone and iPad? Platformers! We can’t get enough of these gems from our childhood, and rare is the genuinely engaging title on iOS that hauls in our interest. Thankfully, though, the developers at Headsoft feel our pain, and have created the truly ingenious platforming masterpiece Jungool. The app comes with gorgeous graphics, a heap of levels, and more than enough jumping, diving, and puzzling to keep our itchy bones satisfied. If you’re a fan of the genre—or of quality iPhone games in general—stick around while we divulge our full thoughts on Jungool below, just after the break.

Concept and Gameplay
4/5

The story behind Jungool is somewhat blasé, involving a plot to destroy the world, spurred by an evil jaguar god with a taste for coconut kiddies. However, beneath the thin plot is a mountain of rock-solid gameplay. The app has players assuming the identity of Wagga, a palm nut-esque creature led through the game by another coconut-y shaman. Players must guide Wagga using the included joystick, directing him across platforms, around obstacles and baddies, and ultimately to the prized masks the characters talk so much about. These masks can be assumed by Wagga, allowing for unique powers and specials depending on the mask. Typically, these masks allow the player to progress to a new area of the level, or to accomplish a given task. All in all, it’s an incredibly engaging mix, and one we can’t help but call fun.

On another note, we loved how the game bases its levels around certain missions. This might be destroying a single enemy, or solving a puzzle, but no matter how you slice it, this level of organization brings more than just free-running platform jumping to the table. It’s a unique way of stacking the gameplay, and we simply couldn’t get enough of it.

Graphics and Controls
4/5

Best of all, Jungool comes with an incredible graphics set, to boot. The app features a very heavy Aztec theme, and it certainly suites the gameplay well. We loved the jungle environments, as well as the rich detail, especially on the iPhone’s Retina display. We did find the joystick controls somewhat sensitive, but after several minutes of solid gameplay, we did manage to get the hang of things. All together, we loved the art style, as well as the simplicity in control scheme. The game takes only seconds to learn, but with such rich level and puzzle design, potentially hours to master—as well as many more hours to actually play!

Overall Value 4.5/5

All in all, Jungool is an incredible value at the dollar it costs in the App Store. If you’re a fan of the genre, or are just looking for a new way to kill the morning commute, Jungool is the ideal candidate. The app is rich, gorgeous, loaded to the gills with levels, and costs less than a Starbucks latte. All in all, it’s a four out of five for Jungool, as well as a hearty recommendation.

Jungool – Great Fun

Jungool: 4 out of 5
Jungool is one of the best free iPhone apps that I’ve come across this month. When you first load the game a short story about a plot to destroy all of the world and it’s thought that a jaguar god is behind it. Your job is to get to the bottom of it and save the mask. There are over 30 levels which include challenging puzzles. If you’re looking to only add a few new addictive games to your list this month you should consider adding this one.

If you like platform games then you won’t be disappointed with this one. The app has a lot of different levels of gameplay so you’re not bored right from the very start and the graphics are pretty great too! The gameplay is pretty simple and straightforward. It does take a bit of practice to get the hang of it but you’ll be “rolling” your way to higher levels in no time. I did struggle a bit with the controls at first but after a few attempts I think I caught on pretty well and it was smooth sailing from that point on.

Each level requires a different thought process which challenges your mind but it’s still simple enough to sit down and actually relax while you play. If you are wise enough to download this one then you won’t be disappointed. The game offers several ways to enjoy the gameplay and it’s very easy to play so it’s great for almost any age.

If you haven’t experienced everything that this game has to offer just yet then you’re definitely missing out. There’s really no reason why you should hesitate to download it. It’s such a great game that I’ve already gotten my family and friends hooked. If you’re tired of not having enough platform games to choose from or if you’re just tired of platform games that don’t live up to your standards then you will definitely want to consider this one. It’s easy to play yet highly addictive. I do recommend only loading this one up when you actually have the time to devote to playing it since it’s just that addictive!

The more you play the more you can unlock. If you enjoy bragging to your friends then the scoreboards are a great feature for you. You’ll be able to prove your abilities and your skills and perhaps win a buck or two if you like to make little bets.

If you’re still debating it perhaps you should read some reviews before you make your decision. The app has gotten some outstanding feedback from those who have been brave enough to test it out and they haven’t been disappointed yet. This isn’t an app that you need to put too much thought into. If you like puzzles and platform games then you can’t go wrong there’s so much great stuff packed into one tiny app – just go for it! For those of you who play on your iPhone you’ll be able to take advantage of the great Retina display on your iPhone 4 or 4S.
